Lumenis Optilight IPL Medical Device
Lumenis Optilight IPL Medical Device is an intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating dry eye. IPL therapy uses a broad spectrum of visible light to target the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oil that helps to keep your tears from evaporating too quickly.
Optilight IPL Treatment
We start your Optilight IPL treatment by placing shields over your eyes to protect them from the light pulses. Following that, a thin layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area and a small device administers the pulses of light to the region around the eyelids, which then dislodge oil buildup.
IPL For Dry Eyes
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is a clinically validated light treatment for dry eye disease caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The efficacy of IPL for patients with dry eye due to MGD was first discovered by Dr. Toyos during treatment of facial rosacea, eventually leading to its application in ophthalmology.
IPL technology addresses the root cause of Dry Eye Disease (DED) by reducing inflammation in the ocular area. IPL uses a xenon flash lamp to produce a light output of wavelengths between 400 and 1200 nm. The treatment eliminates abnormal blood vessels and stimulates the meibomian glands to restore normal oil production. This process improves gland function, stabilizes tear distribution and enhances overall eye comfort.
Targets Inflammation And Dryness
IPL reduces inflammatory markers in the tear film, leading to less dryness and irritation.
Non-Invasive And Efficient Procedure
The treatment protocol involves four sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart with each session lasting 10-15 minutes. The procedure requires no down time, allowing patients to return to their daily activities after treatment.
Reduces Reliance On Temporary Treatments
Technology provides an effective solution for managing dry eye signs, aiming to decrease patients’ dependencies on eye drops, and other short-term treatments, that only provide temporary relief.
Improves Vision And Overall Comfort
Many patients report improvements in vision and reduced discomfort after just 2-3 IPL sessions. Optimal results are often achieved after four treatments, while periodic sessions are recommended for sustained relief.
